WHAT IS RENEW OUR RIVERS?
In 2002 several Plant Hammond employees decided to give back to the rivers. The company's "Bass Tournament" was changed to a "Trash Tournament". Those who in the past filled their boats with largemouth, striped and spotted bass were now filling their boats with old tires, styrofoam coolers, mattress springs and other debris collected from the river banks. Keep Rome Floyd Beautiful partnered in this effort in 2002 and now serves as the organizing branch of the annual event.
The Coosa River system begins in the mountains of North Georgia. The Oostanaula and Etowah rivers wind through the Blue Ridge Mountains and meet in Downtown Rome. This confluence marks the beginning of the Coosa River, which flows west out of Georgia, through eastern Alabama and unites with the Tallapoos a River south of the Fall Line to form the Alabama River. It then flows south to empty into Mobile Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. All told, the Coosa River Basin has a drainage area of over 10,000 square miles!
