Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation joins the recreation community across Georgia in mourning the passing of former director and recreation pioneer Bobby Ray "Bob" Saylors, who passed away on June 5, 2026, at the age of 80.

Saylors served the citizens of Rome and Floyd County from 1980 until his retirement in 2005. During his 25-year career, he helped shape and expand the local parks and recreation system, laying the foundation for many of the programs, facilities, and opportunities that continue to serve the community today.

Known throughout the state as a leader in the recreation profession, Saylors was instrumental in advancing parks and recreation both locally and through his involvement with the Georgia Recreation and Park Association (GRPA). His vision, leadership, and commitment to public service helped establish Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation as one of Georgia’s premier recreation agencies.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Saylors was a mentor to countless recreation professionals. He taught and influenced several future parks and recreation leaders while serving as an instructor at Shorter College, helping guide students into successful careers in the field.

"Bob was one of the pioneers of recreation in Rome and Floyd County and across Georgia," said Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Director Todd Wofford. "He had the vision and laid the groundwork for the recreation system we have today. Bob hired me and gave me an opportunity in 1992. He was a great leader, mentor, and friend. His impact on our community and the recreation profession will be felt for generations."

Saylors was also a passionate supporter of Special Olympics and dedicated much of his life to creating opportunities for individuals of all abilities to participate in recreation and sports.

Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation extends its deepest condolences to Bob's family, friends, former colleagues, and the many lives he touched throughout his distinguished career.

Visitation for Mr. Saylors will be held Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Ponders Melrose Chapel in Dalton, Georgia.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made to Special Olympics in honor of Bob Saylors and his lifelong commitment to serving others. Donations can be made at https://www.specialolympics.org/get-involved/donate/special-olympics-tribute-giving.
